Ascott Jakarta (Thamrin)

by | May 30, 2020

The Ascott Jakarta, located in Tanah Abang, near Thamrin, is a luxury residence with 200 units on 23 floors. The building has both serviced apartments, owned by Ascott, and independent apartments, owned by individuals.

Completed in 1994, it is an aging property, but nonetheless popular because of its very central location, just opposite Grand Indonesia. Even though some of the furniture and equipment tend to be outdated, it has been well-maintained overall. Another positive point is that rooms are more spacious than in more recent residences.

I visited the serviced apartments in Ascott Thamrin in 2020 and here is my review with photos:

Management

Ascott Jakarta is managed by The Ascott Limited, the largest operator of serviced residences in the world and a subsidiary of the Singaporean-based company CapitaLand. It is actually owned by the Government of Singapore, via Temasek Holdings.

Currently, they have more than 700 properties, mostly in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, under various brands: Ascott, Citadines, or Somerset, to name the most famous ones.

Room Amenities

Kitchen

Kitchen in Ascott Jakarta

All the units have a kitchen equipped with a ceramic stove, a fridge, a microwave, and a boiler. There are also some basic cooking utensils (pan, knives, cutting board, spoons, etc).

The washing machine is in the kitchen as well.

Living room and bedroom:

In the living room and the bedroom, two flat-screen TVs with cable channels. The sofas are a bit worn-out but still comfortable enough.

The master bedrooms have a king-size bed (200cm X 200cm). In the other rooms, you normally have a 120cm single bed.

Bathroom:

The bathrooms are classy with plenty of marble tiles. Free toiletries are provided but it is not branded so we can’t be sure about the quality of their products. A hairdryer is available.

Facilities and Services

Swimming pool: This is where I was the most disappointed with this serviced residence. The swimming pool in Ascott Jakarta is really small, and the area surrounding it feels kind of depressing. It definitely lacks plants and trees.

Gym (open from 6 am to 10 pm), with a sauna in the locker. It is quite big, with plenty of machines, but most of the equipment is from 20 years ago. It still works fine, though. You can see an aerobic room in the back as well.

Location

Ascott Jakarta is in a prime location, walking distance to several popular malls and within 5-10 minutes by car from the business district.

Distances:

  • Jakarta Airport (CGK): 60 minutes
  • Grand Indonesia Mall: 5 minutes by foot
  • Sudirman Business District: 5-10 minutes
  • Kota Tua: 35 minutes
  • Kemang: 45 minutes

Surroundings:

When you exit Ascott Jakarta, you arrive on a busy road, often clogged with traffic. Fortunately, there is a decent sidewalk that you can use to walk to Thamrin City or to Grand Indonesia.

Nearby landmarks

Malls:
Grand Indonesia, right next to Ascott Jakarta (less than 5 minutes by foot), is probably the most famous and most popular mall in Jakarta. It is a medium-to-high-end complex where Jakartans love to hang out. You can find almost everything there, and particularly three large department stores (Sogo, Seibu, Central), some popular fashion brands (Zara, H&M), a great cinema, and at least a hundred restaurants. It is packed on weekends.

Plaza Indonesia, opposite Grand Indonesia, is the most luxurious mall in Jakarta. It is home to brands like Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Chanel, etc. On the higher and lower floors, there are also some more affordable shops, a supermarket, a cinema, bars, restaurants, etc.

Thamrin City is also just 5 minutes from Ascott. This huge center is targeting the Indonesian middle-class with many cheap, non-branded shops, most of which sell Muslim wear (Hijab) and batiks. There is also a Hypermart supermarket, a food court, and many affordable restaurants (including fast-food chains like Burger King, Lotteria, and Domino’s).

Supermarkets:
Ranch Market and FoodHall in Grand Indonesia (expensive, imported products), FoodHall in Plaza Indonesia, or Hypermart in Thamrin City (cheap).

Food and Nightlife:
There are hundreds of restaurants in Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia. They offer any kind of cuisines that you may like, at every price. Some are very expensive (like Tatemukai or Caffe Milano), while in some others, you can have a meal for less than US$5.

If you enjoy street food, you will find hundreds of warungs and “kaki limas” near Jalan Kebong Kacang Raya, 5 minutes away from the residence.

Regarding the nightlife: While Mega Kuningan or SCBD are more happening, you still have a fair number of nice bars near Grand Indonesia. For instance, you can check Skye, Cloud, Paulaner Brauhaus, Social House, Cork&Screw, Ninety-Nine, or Burgundy.

Hospitals:
The nearest one is Brawijaya Clinic in UOB building.

Otherwise, the following hospitals are recommended within 15-20 minutes:
SOS Medika Clinic (expensive – international quality)
Siloam Semanggi
Takenoko Clinic (Japanese)
Sahid Sudirman Memorial Hospital

Parks and Recreation:
The closest is the park surrounding the Monas (National Monument), about 2 kilometers away.

Transportation

– Nearest Transjakarta halt: Wisma Nusantara, Plaza Indonesia or Tosari (all are less than 500 meters away)
– Nearest MRT station: Bunderan HI (400 meters away)
– Nearest train station: Sudirman Station (1.3 km away)
– Train station to airport: Sudirman Baru (2 km away).
